FIRST AID LECTURE AND DEMONSTRATION FOR HOME GUARD VOLUNTEERS


Civil Defence Medical Officer Dr. Dattaprasad Nagvekar seen demonstrating methods of first aid on a fracture during the weekly parades of Home Guard volunteers at Police grounds on February 21, 2011.



Civil Defence Medical Officer Dr. Dattaprasad Nagvekar explained that open fractures often require immediate surgery to clean the area of the injury. He said because of the break in the skin, debris and infection can travel to the fracture location, and lead to a high rate of infection in the bone.
Dr Nagvekar was giving a lecture cum demonstration on fractures to the Home Guard volunteers during the weekly parade on February 21, 2011. For open and closed fractures Dr. Nagvekar advised the volunteers the need to Check the breathing , Calm the person ,Examine for other injuries , Immobilize the broken wound, Apply ice to reduce pain / swelling and Consult a doctor .
He said there is need to Control bleeding before treatment .Also there is need to rinse and dress the wound.
Dr. Nagvekar highlighted the importance of soothing the injured and assuring him or her that his injury was light, the need for using safety means (gloves), identifying the type and location of the injury, applying cold compressed wound dressings while avoiding the movement of the injured limb, ensuring the fixation of the injured limb by means of splint, stopping the bleeding of open fractures, and afterwards transporting the injured to the hospital in a proper way.

During the lecture, he discussed the various types of wounds, and how to make the appropriate splints by giving some illustrations before the volunteers. He also shed light on the definitions, symptoms, types, forms and reasons of fractures.
